Education systems were built to prepare people for a lifetime of work in a relatively stable set of jobs. AI is changing which skills are valuable, and may keep changing them every few years. Parents, students and teachers are already asking: what is worth learning now?
Ideas to explore
- Learning throughout life. Moving from education as a phase of youth to something people return to again and again, supported by lifelong learning accounts.
- Human skills. Putting more weight on judgement, creativity, collaboration, care and ethics, which may remain distinctly human for longer.
- AI literacy for everyone. Teaching people to use AI well, question it and understand its limits.
- Learning for its own sake. If work matters less, education could focus more on living a full life, not just getting a job.
Open questions
- Which skills will still matter in 10 or 20 years, and can anyone know?
- What happens to universities if many graduate jobs are automated?
- How do we make sure AI tutors widen opportunity rather than deepen inequality?
